The Bethune-Cookman University National Alumni Association, Inc., a 501(c) (3) tax deductible nonprofit, in collaboration with Rollins College’s Black Student Union and the Polasek Museum, invites you to join us for Central Florida’s new Arts and Jazz Festival … Indaba!
The Indaba Art and Jazz Festival will be held Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Polasek Museum located at 633 Osceola Avenue, in beautiful Winter Park, Florida.
Famed sculptor and educator, Albin Polasek, created more than four hundred works during his career, at least 200 of his works are displayed in the museum and Sculpture Gardens named for him. The majestic surroundings and décor of the museum are in keeping with the electric atmosphere, which will fill the venue during this diverse event.
This culture-filled festival takes its name from the Zulu term Indaba, pronounced “in-daa-ba” which means gathering or place where discussion takes place. At this year’s festival, the community will gather to discuss and celebrate great food, fine wines, exceptional entertainment and impeccable art, with some great net-working amongst like-minded professionals to round out the day.
This year’s festival will be hosted by Yvonne Coleman, on-air personality and host of the “Sunday Jazz Brunch” on Smooth 103.1 WLOQ. In addition, there will be scheduled performances by National jazz recording artist Robert Harris along with regional entertainers Devine Soul, Simply Devine and Neo Soul Diva, Tyesha Williams.
The featured artist for this year’s inaugural event is Everett Spruill. Spruill has spent over 30 years collecting and producing priceless created works of art. He is considered one of Central Florida's biggest influences on African-American art,
Spruill designed and created art for two of Walt Disney World's Black Heritage Celebrations and currently conducts art workshops for Central Florida youth through the Spruill Foundation for the Arts.
He is best known for his ability to create painting depicting jazz artists doing what they do best… jamming! Jazz enthusiasts remark that his work has the ability to leap off the canvas and rock the soul.
In addition to the jazzy sounds, and great artwork will be the vendors. They will be on hand with as much culturally diverse products and keep-sakes as patrons can handle. Last but not least, don’t forget the food. It will simply add to the air of heritage and goodwill set in motion by the musicians and artists.
